Frequently asked questions
When is the performance-risk release used?
It is conditional, not a packet every customer signs. FEF uses it when an accepted scope includes applicable dyno operation, road testing, live calibration, controller programming, module opening, Bench/Boot work or recovery attempts. The normal job begins with the combined Work Order / Estimate & Authorization. Open the conditional release.
What ECUs do you work with?
Projects are evaluated by exact hardware, firmware and scope. Common platforms include Holley Terminator / HP / Dominator, Haltech, MoTeC, MegaSquirt, Link ECU, ECUMaster, Syvecs and other supported standalone systems.
Why does FEF say “platforms change, fundamentals don't”?
The software interface changes, but the core job remains the same: verify hardware, sensors, synchronization and measured timing; build a correct fuel and ignition strategy; control boost or torque where applicable; validate protections; and confirm the result with repeatable data.
Do you work on Volkswagen / R32 / VR6 / Corrado projects?
Selected Volkswagen performance projects are accepted. Project experience includes an R32/GT35 turbo combination, a supercharged VR6 Jetta and a Corrado 3.0 build. See the Volkswagen performance page.
Do you work on LS engines and LS swaps?
Yes. FEF accepts selected Gen III and Gen IV LS calibration work, including swaps and DOD-delete configurations. For the mechanical side, JP's Performance is heavily LS-focused and is known locally as “The LS Master,” with LS swap and installation work quoted by project.
Do you help with a vehicle that does not start?
Yes. First-start/no-start work is handled as commissioning and diagnosis first. Wiring, trigger/sync, measured timing, output assignment, fuel pressure and mechanical condition are verified before blaming calibration tables.
Do you tune turbo and supercharged vehicles?
Yes, accepted forced-induction projects can include fuel, ignition, boost-control, drivability and protection calibration after the base engine and fuel system are proven.
What dyno is used?
Good From Far Garage operates a Dynojet 224X 2WD chassis dyno with drum load control and tach RPM pickup. The vehicle must be compatible with a 2WD chassis dyno and provide a clean, reliable tach signal. The dyno controls and vehicle driving remain with the owner or another qualified individual.
How much are dyno and tuning services?
Dyno-only service through Good From Far Garage is $80/hr with a one-hour minimum. A $720 full-day option is available by advance scheduling with an 8:00 AM–7:00 PM facility-access window. Billable time includes strapping and unstrapping. Good From Far Garage also offers Holley EFI tuning at $240/hr, with package options quoted by project. FEF Performance standalone dyno calibration on accepted projects starts at $240/hr.
How is dyno time paid?
Good From Far Garage reports payment due at unstrapping and accepts cash, credit card, Apple Pay and Venmo. Confirm availability and scheduling directly with the facility at 715-501-9014.
Can you help with engine swaps or installation?
Yes. JP's Performance focuses heavily on LS-based swaps and builds, including Gen III / Gen IV combinations and supporting performance-install work. Projects are quoted individually, and selected standalone ECU installation/commissioning work can be coordinated with FEF.
Do you tune transmissions?
Yes, selected TCU and ZF-family read/write, backup and calibration projects are reviewed through the FLEX Master / StageX workflow. Exact support depends on the transmission controller, part number, hardware and software.
Can you recover a bricked or non-communicating ECU?
Some incorrectly written or corrupted ECUs can be recovered when the hardware is still serviceable and FLEX provides a supported Bench or Boot recovery path. Recovery is evaluated by exact controller and is not guaranteed.
Do you offer diesel tuning?
Selected diesel calibration work is now being reviewed, beginning with supported Volkswagen and Audi TDI applications. FEF does not offer emissions-system defeat or required-diagnostics bypass services.
Are published horsepower results guaranteed?
No. Build Records are specific to the documented vehicle, configuration, fuel, dyno method, conditions and test date. They do not guarantee the same outcome for another vehicle. View the Build Records.
How does booking work?
Start with the Standard Pre-Tune Intake, which creates the Ticket ID. FEF evaluates the vehicle and may request the Advanced Supplement, then contacts the customer with questions or a quote. Accepted work moves to one normal-job agreement and the applicable deposit; conditional documents are added only when the scope requires them.
